H-ASIA April 30, 2013 Professor Barrie Morrison ***************************************************************** From: Peter Harnetty <pxh@shaw.ca> I forward sad news--the message below from Harjot Oberoi reports that Barrie Morrison passed away this past week. Sincerely, Peter Peter Harnetty UBC -------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Oberoi, Harjot Singh Dear Colleagues: I am saddened to write that Professor Barrie Morrison passed away on North Pender Island on April 26, 2013. A memorial service will be held at 2 pm on May 2, 2013 at the Community Centre on North Pender Island. It was a great honour to have Professor Morrison as a colleague, mentor and teacher. He was an influential promoter of Asian Studies across Canada. Professor Morrison was instrumental in setting up of the Canadian Association of Asian Studies. In the Department for many years he taught a very popular course on Monsoon Asia. He was also the first to teach a course on Indian Literature in Translation. In his research work, Professor Morrison was deeply interested in transnational issues, particularly the formation and functioning of agrarian societies in Asia. Although formally trained as a historian of early South Asia, he conducted extensive research in Sri Lanka, Indonesia and contemporary Kerala. In case any colleagues/students who had the privilege to work with Professor Morrison and would like to share their memories of him with us, please write to me. We will post these on the Department's web site. Harjot Oberoi Acting Department Head ------------------------------------------------------------------ Ed. note: I first met Barrie Morrison in December 1961 on my first visit to the Harper Library. I was introduced by Maureen Patterson, the legendary South Asia Bibliographer at Chicago. I am trying to pull together some scattered memories of my contacts with Barrie, especially after I arrived in Seattle and would meet him in our twice-yearly South Asia Colloquium of the Pacific Northwest meetings in Seattle and Vancouver. We hope to have a further obituary notice published on H-ASIA in the near future.
