The person hired will serve as the initial chair of a new Department of Asian Literatures and Cultures (final university approval pending). The ideal candidate will have a distinguished record of scholarship and teaching and experience as an effective administrator. S/he should offer leadership in developing undergraduate curricula, establishing departmental governance, and, at a future date, planning a competitive graduate program. This search is proceeding in tandem with a search for a tenure-line position in Hindi/Urdu literature, open rank. The hires in these two searches will join one current tenured faculty member in modern Japanese literature and fourteen continuing lecturer faculty in Chinese-, Hindi-, Japanese-, and Korean-language in inaugurating the department, which will join the substantial Asian Studies community on campus. Subsequent tenure-line hires in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and South Asian literature, film/media, and performance/cultural studies are planned.
