H-ASIA August 1, 2006 Professor Daniel Lev (October 23, 1933 - July 29, 2006) ************************************************************************ From: Frank Conlon It is my sad duty to report the passing of my University of Washington colleague Professor Daniel S. Lev, the noted specialist on Indonesian law and politics, after a prolonged illness this past Saturday, July 29, 2006. Dan Lev taught in the political science department at the University of Washington from 1970 until he retired in 1999. He had remained active in scholarship and in connections to his many friends in Indonesia since his retirement. Dan was born and grew up in the steel mill town of Youngstown, Ohio, October 23, 1933. In his teen-age years he was a Golden Gloves boxer. He graduated from Miami University of Ohio in 1955 and entered graduate studies at Cornell University, where he studied Southeast Asian politics and a developed a command of Indonesian language. He and his wife Arlene, went to Indonesia for three years where he conducted his dissertation research and became thoroughly acquainted with a wide range of Indonesian scholars and activists. Following completion of his degree, he joined the faculty of the University of California at Berkeley before coming to the University of Washington in 1970. At the Association for Asian Studies conference in 2000, a special panel was devoted to "Guiding Transitions: Daniel Lev’s Influence on Southeast Asian Studies" (abstracts available at the following URL: <http://www.aasianst.org/absts/2000abst/Southeast/SE-37.htm> As reported earlier this year on H-ASIA, he arranged for the donation and transport of a large number of research materials from Seattle to Indonesia to support NGO research and other activities relating to law and democracy in Indonesia. Dan is survived by his wife Arlene, his sone Louis Lev of Pittsburgh and his daughter Claire Murata of Seattle and three grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Friday, August 4, 2006 from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Walker-Ames Room of Kane Hall on the University of Washington campus in Seattle. It is my hope that one of his close colleagues will write a proper obituary for Dan Lev highlighting his many contributions to scholarship and to Indonesian law and society. Frank F.
