H-ASIA November 10, 2004 Query on China-Australia Shipping Routes in the 1890s ************************************************************************ From Ian Welch ian.welch@anu.edu.au Does anyone have access to maps that show the 'normal' shipping routes between Sydney (Australia) and Hong Kong during the 1890s i.e. in the days of a need to coal ships requiring a number of intermediate ports. My research indicates two main routes. The first was Sydney, Brisbane, Torres Strait, Manila, Hong Kong. I am interested in the transit of Indonesia in particular. The British ship Menmuir was a regular on this route as may have been the Catterthun. The second route was Sydney to Singapore. Again, I am interested in the transit of Indonesia and the intermediate ports. As always, in hopeful anticipation of another area of expertise.
