H-ASIA August 27, 2003 Call for papers: Imperialism panel(s) for 18th International Asia Historians Conference, Taiwan, Dec, 2004 (x-post H-Japan) ************************************************************************ From: mark selden <ms44@cornell.edu> A Call for Papers This is an invitation to submit proposals for participation in a panel, or series of panels, on the theme Imperialism and After. The venue is the 2004 International Association of Historians of Asia which will meet in Taipei, Taiwan, December 6-10, 2004. The conference theme is Paradigm Shift in Asia: East, Southeast, and South Asia in Comparative Perspective. The proposed panel seeks to reconsider historical and contemporary empires in Asia in regional and global perspective through the reconsideration of the parameters of historical and contemporary empires. Proposals on all aspects of imperialism old and new, and challenges to empire, are welcomed. The organizers wish to particularly encourage approaches that are large in conception (temporally and/or spatially), analytically innovative, and that cast new light on Asia including Asian regional and subregional systems and global processes as well as intra-Asian comparisons. Proposals addressing the following themes are particularly encouraged: 1. Historical perspectives on Asian empire including the Chinese, Ottoman, Mongol, Russian/Soviet, and other Asian attempts to build regional and/or global empires (12th-19th centuries) including their transformative impacts on the Eurasian continent and beyond. 2. Euro-American concepts and praxis of empire in Asia, and Asian empires in global perspective (19th-20th centuries), including their impact both on Asia and on Europe-America and beyond. 3. Anti-colonial movements and the theory and praxis of independence (19th-20th centuries) in Asian and global perspective. 4. Legacies of empire and the political economy and international relations of postcolonial Asia: postcolonialism, neocolonialism, independence, developmental conundrums related to empires past and present. 5. The rise of East Asia in colonial and postcolonial perspective (1945-present) with particular reference to regional and global impacts and the changing face of empire in the wake of the collapse of the Soviet Union. Please consult the IAHA website at http://www.sinica.edu.tw/~iaha18tw for information about deadlines and travel support. Proposals for papers seeking travel support must be received by the organizer by October 15, 2003; those who do not require travel support should submit proposal by March 15, 2004.Questions about logistics can also be directed to C.
