I first read _The Scorching Wind_, by Walter Macken, in 1970. The novel opens in 1915, with the departure of one brother to fight in Belgium. The second chapter includes two scenes, one highlighting the division in the ranks of the Redmond Volunteers, and the other the use of pregnant French and Belgian prostitutes disguised as nuns to whip up anti-German feelings and encourage recruitment into the army.
