I am looking for information about the export of secondhand clothing from Britain to the United States in the first half of the19th century. A number of contemporary observers described the shipping of bales of used garments between London and New York, some of which were destined for slave plantations in the South. Official trade data has not been very helpful. In records of British exports, secondhand garments seem to have been subsumed within the broad category "Apparel, slops and negro clothing." Can anyone suggest how I might discover the scale of the cross-Atlantic trade in secondhand clothing, or point me toward scholarship which has discussed the question? many thanks Adam Mendelsohn University of Pennsylvania
