For the teacher if not the student (too many words, no pictures) an intelligent, comprehensive, well-written and not too outdated survey is Roger Lockyer, Tudor and Stuart Britain 1471-1714, first published in 1964. I agree with the respondent who remarked that movie clips are fun, though you could spend a sizeable chunk of sixteen weeks pointing out the lies and misrepresentations in Cromwell (1970) alone. Perhaps it's as well that Mel Gibson has yet to address the 16th and 17th centuries. Andy Connell
