---------- Text of forwarded message ---------- Date: Mon, 30 Nov 1992 23:43:20 PST X-From: Rick Gates <LB05GATE@ucsbuxa.bitnet> To: Multiple recipients of list NETTRAIN <NETTRAIN@ubvm.bitnet> Subject: December Internet Hunt ********************************************************* * * * December Internet Hunt * * * ********************************************************* COMMENTS -------- Here it is, the December 92 offering. I think this one is a little easier this month (after all, it's crunch time for many of the folks in university settings.) A total of 42 points is possible (43 with the extra credit). Unquestionably, the most significant development in network access since last month's Hunt has been the emergence of Veronica from the University of Nevada at Reno. Veronica is sort of an Archie for Gopherspace in that it indexes roughly 250 Gopher menu structures. The Big extra is that when you get hits from a Veronica search, the hits are themselves menu choices available to your Gopher client so you can immediately use them. It takes a big step toward answering the question I so often hear; "Well how do you find out where the information is stored to beging with?" Veronica is an extremely useful and powerful tool. I feel it has the capability to help incorporate a whole tier of potential network users. Some, (but not all), of the questions in this month's Hunt can best be answered starting with a Veronica search. CORRECTION ---------- The Polar Raiders, the team from Norway that competed in last month's Hunt scored a total of 42 points instead of the 40 that was reported. THE RULES --------- All questions (save perhaps, the mystery question), can be answered using only the resources of the Net. Answer as many of the questions as you can. Partial credit will be awarded. Team play is allowed. Please identify team entries. Answers that provide the access method will receive full credit. For example: gopher at Extremely Large University Useful Information/ Really Good Stuff/ Recipes Search All My Favorites (?) search with keyword chili ...will receive more points than: search the gopher at ELU for chili All entries must be mailed to me (Rick Gates), by midnight, Dec 7th to receive consideration. THE HUNT -------- 1. (3) What is the atomic weight of boron? (Question contributed by Jim Olivetti.) ---------- 2. (6) Seems like a funny question to ask from so far away, but I'm trying to find a new book on the Internet by an author named Krol. Are there any local bookstores that might carry this? I live in Albuquerque, New Mexico. ---------- 3. (4) Early last month, U.S. president-elect Bill Clinton proposed a new technology policy. Where can I find the text of this proposed policy? ---------- 4. (5) I'm going to be in Denver, Colorado on the nights of Jan 22-25. Will the Denver Nuggets basketball team be playing at home on any of those nights? (Idea for question contributed by Nancy Pope, LSU Library.) ---------- 5. (5) What was the total amount of sales in liquor stores in the United States in September of this year? Was this more than last year? ---------- 6. (6) I'm volunteering some time for a local hiking association. I'd like to know if anything's been written on the development of trails for the handicapped? ---------- 7. (4) What's the name of the FidoNet system that Nik Ellwood of Melbourne Australia runs? ---------- 8. (3) I'm going to London next February. Is there a place that I can ask about some of the different pubs that might help take the chill away? ---------- 9. (3) Where is the ACM's SIGGRAPH '93 Conference being held next August? ---------- 10. (3) I've heard it said that traffic on the Internet is growing at an astronomical rate! Where can I find some statistics that would verify this? ---------- Extra Credit: (1) What's Rick Gates e-mail address? He works in the Library at the University of California at Santa Barbara. ---------- Mystery Question: Here is another idea which exploits the real reason people would find on-line info easier to use than library data - you can process data without retyping it. I want to create a spreadsheet which adjusts my monthly investment account balances for inflation as measured by the Consumer Price Index. Where can I get the monthly CPI values for the last decade on-line? I know CENDATA carries this (e.g. on Compu$erve), but I'm not sure where it is on the internet. Must be there - I'll search for it if you don't know where.... (Question contributed by Neal McBurnett, AT&T Bell Labs, Denver) ---------- Enjoy! --------------------------------------------------------------------- Rick Gates (805) 893-7225 Dir. of Library Automation Univ. of California lb05gate@ucsbuxa.ucsb.edu Santa Barbara, CA 93106 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gleason Sackman BBS: sackman@sendit.nodak.edu Coordinator Internet: sackman@plains.nodak.edu SENDIT - NoDak's K-12 Telcom Network Bitnet: sackman@plains.bitnet BOX 5164, NDSU Computer Center Voice: (701)237-8109 Fargo, ND 58105 Fax: (701)237-8541
