For the period of Classcal antiquity, Mary Renault's *The Last of the Wine* is unsurpassed. Students will meet Socrates, Alcibiades, Critias and the whole gang of 5th cent. Athenians, vivdly portrayed, as well as a frank depiction of homosexual love that will raise their eyebrows. For Late Antiquity, Gore Vidal's *Julian* is top notch. For China I would suggest *The Celebrated Cases of Judge Dee (Dee Goong An* trans. with intro. by Robert Van Gulik. Dover, 1976. This is the actual 18th century text that inspired Van Gulik's wonderful imitations. I think Students would like it very much. Bruce Macbain bmacbain@mecn.mass.edu
