My preference in teaching such courses is not to use a textbook but several monographs. The liveliest for Egypt is still John Wilson, *The Culture of Ancient Egypt* and less lively is Kramer, *The Sumerians*. Also helpful are selected chapters from Gardiner's *Ancient Egyptian Grammar* which is easy to teach and engages students in Middle Kingdom hieroglyphics as a way into understanding a different mode of thought.
