My experience was not like that. My students were sort of amused by the Mesopotamians (though the Biblical references I tried to throw in to make it relate to something they might have heard of fell flat). But Egypt was a source of considerable interest. Some wanted to talk about King Tut, some wanted to talk about Akehenaton (they all found that story pretty bizarre), and in one section student made an extended Martin Bernal type argument about Egypt and its African elements. I spent a weekend reading Diap and Bernal to be ready for the second day I spent on Egypt. It was a little exhausting. Now that I think about it, the students were also sort of interested in the social history aspects of that chapter, the role of women, questions of class and hierarchy, and the influence of other cultures. So Egypt went pretty well, and that was true in two sections. Elizabeth Dale U of Chicago erd1@midway.uchicago.edu
