Mike Yared <email@example.com> -----Message from: Greg Banner <firstname.lastname@example.org>----- I found a 2d Cavalary Association Regimental History Center. http://history.dragoons.org/category/customs-and-traditions/ It shows the 2d ACR getting a PUC for one battalion in WWII (awarded in 1945) and then one for the current war in Iraq. Greg Banner <email@example.com> -----Message from: Greg Banner <firstname.lastname@example.org>----- For those who don't understand the US awards system, there are unit awards and individual awards. The Presidential Unit Citation is one such unit award. In the Army, if you are assigned to that unit during the period the unit award is made, you can wear that award forever (even after leaving that unit). But any personnel subsequently assigned to that unit can wear that unit's awards while assigned there. So for example all of the soldiers currently assigned to the 82d Airborne Division, when in their dress uniforms will be wearing the 82d's unit awards from WWII, etc... But when they leave the 82d they will remove them. But in my experience I never saw any formal ceremony when "old" unit awards were presented to new arrivals or when any big deal was really made of them; it was a normal part of processing into a unit that the new soldiers was advised of the old unit awards so that he/she could get them on their dress uniforms. My only guess in reading this story is that this soldier, assigned to the 2d ACR in the mid-1960s was there when the award was made to the unit for something they had done previously (WWII or Korea?). That is not unheard of - for individual or unit awards to be processed and approved sometimes decades after the event. Regards Greg Banner LTC, USA (ret.)
