Dear colleagues, currently I am thinking about an appropriate way to imagine, conceive and finally, write the history of battle. I already considered Keegan's remarkable Face of Battle and we discussed this issue on a German conference of the Arbeitskreis Militärgeschichte (Militar History Study Group, with members from different backgrounds, mainly universities) in 2009. The idea of the conference was to discuss a cultural approach to the history of battles. My idea was to scrutinize battles by taking into account the different perspectives of the participants, such as officers of high rank, or the soldiers in the front line. On those reflections I wrote a paper (in German, up to now unpublished). Unfortunately so far I was not able to find any texts which reflect on a more theoretical or methodological approach of this seminar event in military history. In order to arrange the ideas on the history of battle in all its implications my question is if you know any appropriate approaches on battle history, be it in a more theoretical way or in a concrete example. I would be happy to receive any hints.
