A useful review, but... It fails to distinguish (as Norman Davies does so masterfully in _No Simple Victory_) among the Allies (except in one sentence): "MacDonogh's reportage is replete with naïve but craven Americans, larcenous and vengeful French, dignified but arrogant English, and rapacious and bestial Russians." I do not propose that British, French, and United States' criminal behavior by soldiers/occupiers be excused. However, I do propose that we recognize that one of the "Allies" was in fact the criminal state led by Josef Stalin--a state that was interrupted in the midst of slaughtering its own citizens by the millions by the invasion of another criminal regime (bent on slaughtering in the millions, too). Not making this distinction, either in the book or the review, is an error. A useful movie on occupation, Soviet-style, is the recent Polish film "Katyn." Vr, John John T.
