I am endeavoring to verify several well-known quotations. They are cited with great frequency, and are always attributed to a single individual, but without identifying the original source. Their wording also varies a little from reference to reference, leading me to wonder if they are apocryphal. The first is Douglas MacArthur's advice to "never get involved in a land war in Asia." Another is Arthur Wellesley's (the Duke of Wellington) comment about trying to find out what's on "the other side of the hill." The last is Benjamin Franklin's reply to another onlooker at the demonstration of the world's first balloon. When asked, "what good is it?" Franklin asked, "What good is a newborn baby?" my thanks, in advance Roger Horky PhD Student and Teaching Assistant History Department Texas A&M University College Station TX ----- For subscription help, go to: http://www.h-net.org/lists/help/ To change your subscription settings, go to http://h-net.msu.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=h-war -----
