Dear Collegues: I am doing research for an article on famous wartime trickery, from the ancient world to the present. What I am looking for is not mundane camouflage, jamming of communications, use of dummies etc. but rather the more spectacular ones in size, fame, elaboration and consequence. The point is to show their timelessness in contrast to other perspectives of war that changes with development of technology. So far, I have noted these ones: The horse of Troy Bonfires of Samos - Greek War of Independence (need sources on that one). Jasper Maskelyne's concealment of the Suez Canal. Operation Mince Meat - fake invasion plans for Sicily planted on a drowned British "officer" dumped in Spanish waters. FUSAG - fake US army group to invade France at Pas de Calais Fortitude North - Deception plan before Normandy, fake Invasion plan for Scandinavia .and several specific Norwegian ones. Tips will be rewarded with unlimited thankfulness.
