I'm glad to see that at least a few contributors have understood that Franco's credentials as a general and as an historical figure must take account of his undoubted political acumen. Franco managed to consolidate a splintered anti-Republican movement, deftly make himself its leader, and prosecute the war in such a way as to allow his rivals-- as well as the leftist enemy --to dissipate their strengths. It was never enough to simply have a victory over the Left-- Franco sought a *political* victory that would leave him as Caudillo and would geld both the Falange and the Monarchists. I've always admired Franco for his success at those goals-- and for preventing a Stalinist Spain. Lohr E. Miller Louisiana State University P.M. Hebert Law Center
