The cited figures are wrong on several accounts. There were, for example, not 20,000 Portuguese troops, but barely 2,000. This was inflated to two divisions in Republican propaganda. In fact, during Franco's victory parade in Madrid they could hardly get enough Portuguese troops together to pretend to have two banderas. As for statistics, Alcofar Nasses (a pen name for a moderately pro-Republican writer), Salas Larrazabal (who tends to be pro-Franco), and several others have presented them in a lot more detail than the work cited, which, among other things, seems to omit the non-International Brigade volunteers for the Republic, who numbered in the many thousands. I am not at the moment in proximity to my SCW collection, though I will be in about two weeks, and will try to supply a list of references at that time Albert A.
