Call for papers: MESA 2014 Panel title: Personnel and Patronage: Getting Ahead in the Ottoman System Organizers: Linda T. Darling (University of Arizona) Christine Isom-Verhaaren (Benedictine University) Ottoman military and civilian elites were recruited from a wide variety of sources, from the sultan's household and the palace to members of the governing class, high-ranking or low, to outsiders with experience or technical know-how and even, according to commentators, to riff-raff and personal favorites of the great. But promotion did not follow automatically on success; whatever their background, these people did not advance in the Ottoman system on their own. Networking and patronage were the keys to advancement in the close-knit society of the empire's top ranks (and perhaps lower down as well). This panel will delve into the processes of advancement and patronage in greater detail. It seeks papers that explore not only the effects of patronage on elite recruitment and promotion, but how these processes worked and how we learn about them in specific instances, from military promotion to literary and artistic patronage and everything in between. (Right now I can't think of anything else to say here.) Please send your abstracts to Linda T. Darling, ldarling@email.arizona.edu<mailto:ldarling@email.arizona.edu> and Christine Isom-Verhaaren, isomver@gmail.com before February 12, 2014. Abstracts must be no more than 300 words and adhere to MESA abstract guidelines, available here: http://www.mesa.arizona.edu/annual-meeting/call-for-papers.html --
