I am delighted to find an H-Net list that is aware of the great Charles Sumner. I have taken copious notes from his speeches (those through the time that Melville was completing Moby-Dick) that I placed on various websites, including my own, to make the argument that Herman Melville's character Captain Ahab could have been partly inspired by Sumner's speeches and his image as a firebrand. Here is the link to my notes: http://clarespark.com/2009/10/05/charles-sumner-moderate-conservative-on -lif elong-learning/. I would be interested in seeing comments that evaluate David Herbert Donald's biography of Sumner (in two volumes), the first of which was unremittingly hostile in my view.
