[Posted by Margaret DeLacy, February editor, email@example.com] Friends: The transfer of H-Scholar will make some new services available to our subscribers, but with every change some learning is needed. Here are some tips for using the new Commons system. When you go to the new H-Commons website, you will see a blue profile in the top right hand corner of your screen. That is where you should go to make any changes to your Commons Profile. The profile icon will have a note next to it that says "log in" if you need to log in. If you are logged in, you can log out by clicking on the little "v" next to the profile and selecting "log out" from the drop-down menu. To see what the all new H-Scholar will look like, you can take a look at H-HOAC which has just opened up shop on the Commons at https://networks.h-net.org/h-hoac . To see what H-Scholar might become with your participation, check out h-Sport at https://networks.h-net.org/h-sport, H-Nationalism at https://networks.h-net.org/h-nationalism or H-SHEAR at https://networks.h-net.org/h-shear. Although you can receive posts more or less as you ever did (unless you change your settings) posting your own message to the list has become a bit more complicated. Please note the following: --You must be a subscriber in order to post. If you are reading this now, you are already a subscriber and your account is waiting for you. Please begin by logging in with the password that has been sent to you and create a new password. Those joining after the move should create accounts. --You CANNOT reply to a previous post simply by selecting "reply" in your e-mail program --You CAN reply to a post by choosing the "REPLY TO THIS POST" link in every message . --If you select "REPLY TO THIS POST" it will take you to a screen where you can insert your reply. If the screen says "ACCESS DENIED" it means you need to log in first. YOUR REPLY IS NOT COMPLETE UNTIL YOU HAVE ADDED A "TAG" in the designated spot below your reply. When you type into the box, the computer may supply some suggestions for you to select. You can keep your own, select a suggested tag and/or add others. --After adding the TAG, you MUST scroll down and PREVIEW the message using the PREVIEW THIS MESSAGE button at the very bottom of the screen. --IF YOU CLOSE THIS PAGE BEFORE SELECTING PREVIEW YOU WILL LOSE YOUR WORK. IF you want to pause to consider your message, open another screen to check something, use the "forward" or "back" button on your browser or even post a longish message, be sure to SAVE YOUR WORK. The easiest way to do this from a desktop computer is with "cut" (highlight your work and then simultaneously select the control key and the letter C). You can then "paste" your work back in a blank screen (using "control and the letter V). --After selecting PREVIEW, you will see a new screen containing your message in a yellow box. If you scroll down below that, you will see boxes where you can edit both the title and the body of your text if you wish. You can select PREVIEW as often as you wish to check the appearance of your message. --Once you have PREVIEWED the message, you will be able to select a "SEND TO EDITOR" button which will submit it to the list editor for moderation. --After receiving the message, the editor will moderate it and you will receive an e-mail telling you what has happened to the message. Most of the time, the message will tell you the message has been published. Occasionally you will receive a message asking for a revision. The editors also retain the right to reject any message deemed inappropriate for the list. Our posting guidelines have not changed. If revisions are needed, the message will include a link to take you to the appropriate screen. Hints: If you wish, you can also post to the list through the website. Go to the list homepage and scroll down until you see a big cross and a "Create Content" link in the right hand column. Select that link and follow the steps for posting listed above in this message. You can also bookmark the network in your browser and log in. As long as you remain logged in, you can reply from the webpage. Follow the steps for completing your post listed above in this message. Once you arrive at the correct page for posting a reply, the website will walk you through the necessary steps in order as you scroll down. When you are comfortable with the list, you can go to your "MY H-NET" page to make choices about what content you want to see on your page and how messages will be sent to you. If you need more information on the new lists, I'd recommend the following help files on the H-Net Commons website: See https://networks.h-net.org/node/905/pages/8915/my-h-net-list-gone-what-do-i-do https://networks.h-net.org/node/905/pages/943/getting-started https://networks.h-net.org/node/905/pages/1427/h-net-commons-qa --
