We are looking for an additional panelist for the SHEAR 2009 meeting in Springfield, IL, on July 16-19. The panel is tentatively entitled, "Identity and Reputation on the Southern Frontier, 1780-1820." Natalie Inman's paper will use the experiences of the Ross and Ridge families to illustrate how Native American peoples on the Tennessee frontier began reshaping their identities in relation to the presence of African slaves. Kristofer Ray's paper will argue that John Sevier's involvement in the failed State of Franklin experiment offers insight into how fluid political reputation could be on the frontier. An additional paper would somehow need to tie into these two papers, although it need not center on Tennessee. Please send all queries to mcheathem@cumberland.edu. The deadline for submissions is Dec. 1, so a prompt response is requested. Thanks, Mark R. Cheathem, Ph.D. Associate Professor of History Cumberland University Co-editor, H-SHEAR
