Dear fellow SHEARITES, I am teaching a course on Jefferson to Jackson, and would love some input on potential books that would meet the needs of a class mixed with MA and BA students. Here are some books I have considered using thus far: Paul Johnson's book on Patch the Famous Jumper Harrry L. Watson's Liberty and Power And I am considering Paul Johnson and Sean Wilentz's book The Kingdom of Mathias. I do intend to use Theda Perdue and Michael Greene's The Cherokee Removal: A Brief History with Documents. Another question: As anyone ever used the Bedford St. Martin's book by Paul Finkleman on the Pro-Slavery Southern Argument? Recommendations on topics such as Jeffersonian politics, the market economy (excluding Charles Seller's tome), class formation (excluding Shopkeeper's Millenium and The Cradle of the Middle Class), and religion would be most appreciated. All the best, Mark A. Nicholas Assistant Professor of History, University of St. Thomas Houston H-Amindian Book Review Editor 713-525-2106 nicholma@stthom.edu
