Date: Tue, 22 Nov 2005 13:18:01 -0600 From: Paul Finkelman <paul-finkelman@utulsa.edu> Does anyone know the first name (and anything else) about an editor/publisher named "Freer" who was the editor of the Ulster (NY) Gazette. I am guessing he was Federalist. He was prosecuted for reporting about the prosecution of Harry Croswell, the federalist newspaperman who the Jeffersonians in New York prosecuted in 1803 for criritizing TJ. I am trying to figure out if Freer was also a victim of the Democratic-Republican "reign of witches" following Jefferson's election and his suggestion to his friends in the states that a "few prosecutions" of federalist editors would have "a wholesome effect." I would appreciate any help or suggestions anyone has on Freer. Feel free to contact me offlist if you want. -- Paul Finkelman Chapman Distinguished Professor of Law University of Tulsa College of Law 3120 East 4th Place Tulsa, OK 74104-3189 918-631-3706 (office) 918-631-2194 (fax) paul-finkelman@utulsa.edu
