Date: Thu, 17 Nov 2005 21:21:13 -0500 (EST) From: "J. Douglas Deal" <deal@Oswego.EDU> Paul: The phrase isused in TJ's letter of 4 June 1798 to John Taylor, reprinted in the Library of America edition of Jefferson's writings, edited by Merrill Peterson. in his notes , Peterson says he is using the transcription of the letter published in the Massachusetts Historical Society Collections, 7th ser., vol.1 (1900), 61-64. I mention this because this version differs slightly from that included in the Paul Leicester Ford edition of the Works of Jefferson. Right before the "reign of witches" sentence, Jefferson says about the New Englanders that they are "marked, like the Jews, with such a peculiarity of character as to constitute from that circumstance the natural division of our parties." (Peterson version; the Ford version uses the word "perversity" instead of "peculiarity"). I don't know which is correct.
