I'd like to second Prof. Barnhart's suggestion regarding the John Brown "American Experience" documentary. I thought it quite well-done, and it addresses the complexities that existed in the antislavery movement--"fanaticism" versus "reason"; legal or extralegal means in abolitionism; the important role of religion; the question of violence; and the larger issues of race and prejudice in the antislavery community. It was shown on the PBS station here earlier this semester, and my Civil War students had a very engaging and profitable discussion about these types of issues from their viewing of the piece.
