Sent: Sunday, January 23, 2011 7:56 PM To: H-ORALHIST@H-NET.MSU.EDU Subject: IRB for independent scholars? I am an independent scholar and have recently joined the OHA. I am applying to the NSF for funding for my historical research. This research calls for oral history interviews and the program officer urged me to speak in the application to the problem of IRB review if I am an independent scholar. Does anyone on the list have experience with this? My understanding is that most universities exempt oral historians from IRB review. Is this true? Thank you for your help, Rachael Rosner
