To: H-ORALHIST@H-NET.MSU.EDU Sent: Thursday, January 4, 2007 7:44:00 AM Subject: Re: Ethics & LGBT Mental Health Service Users Dear All: I would like to draw your attention to a wonderful chapter (S. Anthony Thompson, (2002) "My Research Friend? My Friend the Researcher? My Friend, My Researcher? Mis/Informed Consent and People with Development Disabilities, pp. 95- 106 in Will C. van den Hoonaard, ed. Walking the Tightrope: Ethical Issues for Qualitative Researchers,Toronto: U. of Toronto Press)). There is also a piece by Mary Stratton on research within closed institutions in that same volume. The Journal of Academic Ethics is devoting a whole volume (2007) to ethics and research in the humanities. There are a number of articles there (such as by Nancy Janovicek) about oral history. I also notice that the most recent issue of JEHRE (J. of Empirical Research on Human Research Ethics), Sept. 2006 ( Vol. 1, no. 3) has an article by Deborah Poff, "The Importance of Story Telling: Research Protocols in Aboriginal Communities." [I might add that the term "Protocol," acc. to any standard-dictionary definition implies a measurement that is not subject to interpretation--quite the opposite of what researchers in the humanities and the social sciences are doing! My suggestion: don't use the term "protocol" which is a bio-medical research one. Our research methodologies are meant to use interpretive measures] Best regards, Will C. van den Hoonaard Will C. van den Hoonaard Professor of Sociology University of New Brunswick POB 4400, Fredericton, NB E3B 5A3 Tel.
