The Library Company of Philadelphia's Program in Early American Economy and Society invites applications for dissertation and short-term fellowship for research during 2014-2015. These research fellowships are designed to promote scholarship in early American economy and society, broadly defined, from its colonial beginnings to the 1850s. Possible research topics include Atlantic and global connections of the American economy; commerce, business, technology, manufacturing, agriculture, internal development, or political economy; the history of race and the economy, capitalism, households, or gendered constructions of the economy. All fellows are expected to be resident researchers in Philadelphia for the duration of awards. One dissertation research fellowship will be awarded, carrying a stipend of $20,000, tenable for nine consecutive months of residency from Sept. 1, 2014 to May 31, 2015; or it may be divided equally between two scholars, for the periods Sept. 1, 2014 to Jan. 15, 2015, or Jan. 15 to May 31, 2015. Four to six one-month fellowships will also be awarded, carrying stipends of $2,000 each and tenable for one month of continuous residence and research at the Library Company between June 1, 2014 and May 31, 2015. Deadline for receipt of all materials is March 1, 2014. Please begin by filling out an electronic cover sheet at www.librarycompany.org/fellowships<http://www.librarycompany.org/fellowships>. Then please create one continuous PDF file that includes (a) a cover letter stating clearly which award is (or awards are) being sought and for which tenable period; (b) a brief résumé; (c) a research proposal of four to five pages outlining the larger project and the research to be pursued during the fellowship; and (d) for the dissertation fellowship, a writing sample of no more than 25 pages (no writing sample is required for a one-month award). This PDF file should be submitted to fellowships@librarycompany.org<mailto:fellowships@librarycompany.org>. For the dissertation fellowship, applicants should have two letters of recommendation submitted as PDF files to this email address; for the short-term awards, applicants should have at least one letter of recommendation sent to this email address.
