That's great, Linda. Among Al's many accomplishments was his central role in building a distinctive History Dept. at DeKalb (at a time when elite institutions were trying to close down such newer PhD programs). The conference you mention should be aware of its predecessors, including a magnificent conference that Al organized many years back, bringing Hobsbawm, Gutman, and others out to DeKalb. This occurred not too long after my then colleagues at the Univ of Chicago asked for suggestions for hiring an English historian. I suggested Edward Thompson, and they said, "Edward Who?" Jesse Lemisch Subject: Re: Pope's Day [L Kerber] > Jesse, > > Your timing is perfect. Your November 1 message came on the day of the Annual History Graduate Student Conference at Northern Illinois University, where Al taught for so many years. The students have renamed the conference "In Honor of Professor Alfred F. Young," and held it not only virtually on Pope's Day but on Al's Yahrzeit -- the anniversary of his death on November 6, 2012. > > Linda Kerber --
