In case others haven't made these suggestions: -Regarding breast cancer: Abigail "Nabby" Adams Smith (daughter of Abigail and John Adams) died of breast cancer after an attempted mastectomy. James Olsen writes about this in an article that I believe is titled "Wounded and Presumed Dead: Breast Cancer in America" (I don't have the exact reference available). This in turn, I believe is an excerpt from his larger book on breast cancer in early America. -Regarding child birth: Laurel Thatcher Ulrich's _Midwife's Tale_ is the classic on such a practitioner. The entire diary upon which it is based, along with some other relevant primary and secondary sources is available at dohistory.org. best wishes, Stephen Feeley McDaniel College Westminster, Maryland --
