To: h-oieahc@H-NET.MSU.EDU, firearmsregprof@listserv.ucla.edu X-Mailer: NeoMail 1.21 Delivered-to: h-oieahc@h-net.msu.edu I have been pointed to John Hope Franklin's _The Free Black in North Carolina_, 100-2, and indeed, the lack of prohibition on free blacks in the colonial North Carolina militia laws reflects the actual situation: free blacks did serve in the North Carolina militia until the early Republic. On a related subject: Emory University has announced that their internal investigation of the claims of academic misconduct involving Professor Michael Bellesiles and _Arming America_ is complete, and as a result, scholars external to Emory are now investigating the charges.
