Dear subscribers: H-NET normally leaves the circulation of virus alerts to the usual and accepted sources of such information. But the recent outbreak of the Klez virus does call for a reminder to all of you to update your antivirus protections, because this virus has a couple of features that have had a major impact on our operations. This virus sends mail to addresses found in the address books of victim computers; it also forges the from address of these messages, often using one found in the address book. Bounce responses from mail you didn't send are a common result. Some H-Net subscribers appear to be infected, as a number of you have reported such bounces. Of particular significance is the fact that many of you have a list address (such as H-ALBION@H-NET.MSU.EDU) in your address books; the result is that mail sent by the virus sometimes has a list address in the from: line. This has generated return mail to our editors from irritated recipients. Klez has a destructive behavior which is triggered on the 6th day of each odd numbered month. Monday May 6th will be the next such date. The Symantec web site provides useful information about the virus: "E" variant: http://www.sarc.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.klez.e@mm.html "G/H" variant: http://www.sarc.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.klez.h@mm.html This would be a good time for everyone to check their antivirus software to ensure it's current, and working properly. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Prof. Peter Knupfer Vice President, Networks H-Net: Humanities & Social Sciences Online 310 Auditorium Bldg Michigan State University East Lansing, MI 48824 FAX: +517 355 8363 Voice: +517 355 9300 Email: peter@mail.h-net.msu.edu http://www.h-net.msu.edu %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
