SOCIEDADE E CULTURA Call for papers for the thematic dossier: "Populism and neopopulism: theories, contexts and praxis" Org.: Silvana Krause (Universidade Federal de Goiás, Brazil) and Karl Dieter Hoffmann (Katholische Universität Eichstätt-Ingolstadt, Germany) The journal SOCIEDADE E CULTURA (Society and Culture) is calling for articles for the thematic Dossier “Populism and Neopopulism: Theories, contexts and praxis”, organized by Professor Silvana Krause (Federal University of Goiás, Brazil) and Dr. Karl Dieter Hoffmman (Latin America Central Institut – ZILAS/ Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt, Germany). The publication is planned for vol. 13, n. 2, July/December 2010. Articles should be in Portuguese, English or Spanish, using the norms of the Review (see www.revistas.ufg.br/index.php/fchf), and should deal with the following subject: The subject “populism”, political phenomenon mostly associated to Latin America continent at the middle of the 20th century, has reappeared with a new agenda for research, especially after the development of “third wave” young democracies. This phenomenon emerges with new configurations, but with well-known methods of political practice. For most social scientists, a new political profile has developed that extrapolates the control of democratic institutions and reinforces fixed vices in the political culture of Latin America. Nevertheless, the neo-populism seems to be a phenomenon, that isn’t exclusive to Latin America, because, with the challenges of the democracies of the 20th century and the weakness of representative institutions, political leaders emerge with the old characteristics from the well-known populism (like charismatic and messianic leadership, anti-imperialism, political personalism, national development concepts) with something “new”, like anti-politics, nationalism, anti-globalization, leadership over institutions. After all, there is a new international constellation with new challenges, but just the same thing with new clothes. That phenomenon adjusts to the political and economical context of the 21st century, overloaded with political demands and exhausted by the frustrations with representative democracy. This Dossier intends to include pertinent articles that analyze theoretical/conceptual aspects of this phenomenon, especially their impact on democratic regimes, as well as case studies. The contributions should be sent directly to the organizers using the emails: krausesilvana@yahoo.com.br or karl.hoffmann@ku-eichstatt.de . The deadline for sending the papers is: March 31, 2010. Besides the articles for the dossier, SOCIEDADE E CULTURA also accepts in a steady flow other contributions: articles on diverse themes, research notes, reviews of relevant books in the social sciences. These texts should be sent to the editors of the periodical through the email cultura@cienciassociais.ufg.br or on the site www.revistas.ufg.br/index.php/fchf .
