Williamjames: a few years ago, Ed Surrency wrote up a short (maybe 10 p) memoir of the founding and first 15 years of so of ASLH. I would suggest contacting him. Best of luck with this project, Sally Gordon ---- Sarah Barringer Gordon Arlin M Adams Professor of Constitutional Law and Professor of History University of Pennsylvania 3400 Chestnut Street Philadelphia, PA 19104-6204 tel: 215.898.3069 fax: 215.573.2025 email: sgordon@law.upenn.edu ________________________________ From: Ken Aldous <aldous@MAIL.H-NET.MSU.EDU> Reply-To: H-Net and ASLH Legal History list <H-LAW@H-NET.MSU.EDU> Date: Wed, 20 Oct 2010 09:06:24 -0400 To: H-Net and ASLH Legal History list <H-LAW@H-NET.MSU.EDU> Subject: Re: H-Law: The History of the ASLH (W Hoffer) For a snapshot of the ASLH membership in 1991, see Ann D. Gordon, USING THE NATION'S DOCUMENTARY HERITAGE: THE REPORT OF THE HISTORICAL DOCUMENTS STUDY (National Historical Records and Publications Commission, 1992). The study was based on a survey of random samples of the membership of ASLH, OAH, AASLH, the National Council on Public History, and the National Genealogical Society. Gordon summarized the responses from ASLH members in "A Portrait of Research in Legal History," LEGAL REFERENCE SERVICES QUARTERLY 20:1/2 (2001), 5-15. In particular I am curious about the membership and leadership of the ASLH over its existence. Has there always been a large majority of law professors both in the membership and in leadership positions? Are there any histories of the society I should know about? I would appreciate any comments both on or off list. Many thanks, Williamjames Williamjames Hull Hoffer, J.D., Ph. D.
