Greetings, I have hit a snag in my current project on the caning of Charles Sumner and was hoping the list could help. What were the laws regarding criminal assault in Washington, D.C., in 1856? What books or articles are there on this? Are there any records of the trial of Sumner's assailant, Preston S. Brooks, other than newspapers? David Donald's biography of Sumner is less than useful. He gets the location of the court wrong (Baltimore instead of D.C.). Many thanks, Williamjames Williamjames Hull Hoffer Associate Professor of History Seton Hall University hofferwi@shu.edu, 973-275-2184
