Given what you say, I suspect the best tools available are the Anglo-Hindu works from the East India Company rule and from the Raj. For the first, see Sir William Jones's translation of Laws of Menu, and for the second, see Herbert Cowell's treatises, particularly (for the problems of inhereitance, Cowell's first Tagore Lecture, volume I of his earlier treatise.
