A call for articles from JURIX, one of the few organizations in Russia litigating constitutional matters, particularly those involving freedom of the press. Perhaps some of us will wish to contribute. Joe Luttrell Meyer Boswell Books, Inc. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Wed, 15 Aug 2007 19:15:31 +0400 From: Anita Soboleva <asoboleva@jurix.ru> Subject: call for articles Call for articles Dear colleagues, JURIX - an independent non-governmental Russian organizations, aimed at protection of constitutional rights and freedoms and dissemination of legal knowledge about rule of law and internationally recognized human rights standards - is going to publish a book of articles "Eliminating legal obstacles to freedom of press", which would contain comparative materials from different jurisdictions and countries on freedom of press cases. The idea of the book is to place some Russian cases, involving the rights of journalists and press, into comparative legal environment and to let the reader of the book (a constitutional or a mass media lawyer, a practitioner, a student of journalism or law, an academician or a public official, a chief editor or a state official of an administrative body, who is in charge of supervising the press) to find, estimate and counterbalance different arguments, which may be found for the analysis of the cases, involving press and journalists. The selected articles (from 5 to 15 pages long) will be translated into Russian and published in the book (expected time of publication - March 2008, articles are accepted for review by September 30, 2007, in Russian or in English; in stipulated cases in French or German by previous consent from JURIX). The editor of the translations and the book in general - Anita Soboleva, JURIX' Chief Counsel on Legal Science and Education. Honoraria for the articles are not paid, but we will translate the article into Russian and will send you the book. We preserve the copy-right only for the Russian translation. Articles, which were published in other journals or books, can be also accepted, if you keep the copy-right for them and provide us with your written permission. The following topics are welcome: * Comments on the latest decisions of your country's courts (2002-2007) on freedom of press cases, or commentary to one or several recent controversial or the most important decisions; * Court practice on public display or dissemination of prohibited signs, symbols, paraphernalia, emblems (such as Nazi symbols); * Responsibility of journalists and press for publication of materials, which contain calls for violent acts or incite religious, ethnic or other hate (in Russia, for instance, also for ideological, social, national hatred); * Balancing the freedom of press and right to dignity and honor of public officials, public figures, famous people; * Libel law and judicial practice on libelous, insulting, negative publications; * Restrictions on political advertising, including advertising during election campaigns; correlation between laws on commercial advertising and political advertising. * Internet mass media and responsibility for calls to violent acts through Internet media; responsibility of bloggers and anonymous posts in Internet chars; * Searches and seizures in press offices. Different aspects of libel laws and their implementation are a priority, because the general idea of the project, which this book is a part of, is decriminalization of libelous and insulting speech in press. The publication of the book is financed by the European Commission (EIDHR). I will be glad to answer all you questions and discuss the details from August 28th, when I am back from my vacation.
