One option that might help in the short and longer term is for local arrangements committees to find alternative sites for lodging with different rates, especially if the main hotel (which has meeting facilities sufficient for the purpose) is on the more expensive side. I think the best plan is to find a single venue that can be the main meeting site but is less expensive, but if that's not possible or workable, making arrangements for a less expensive alternative (and easy transportation back and forth, if not within walking distance) would help.
