I live in San Diego and I emailed UNITE HERE's organizer in San Diego, Powell DeGange, on Monday, August 17, to ask about the boycott of the Manchester Grand Hyatt and the likelihood of picket lines in January 2010. I organized a panel that was accepted by the AHA and I asked Mr. DeGange if moving my panel to another hotel (panels will also be held at the San Diego Marriott) would honor their picket of the Grand Hyatt. He indicated that it would be a fine solution. Here is his response: "Dear Mr Zukas Thank You for your interest and support. There are on going picket lines at the Manchester Hyatt and there is no sign of them letting down in 2010 when the AHA violates the boycott. If your panel is moved to an alternate hotel, that would be much appreciated. The boycott is solely on the Manchester Hyatt, so any panel or event elsewhere is golden and no problem. What is your panel called? Please keep me posted Powell DeGange UNITE HERE Local 30" I had previously emailed the conference organizers to request that they move my panel to the Marriott and I emailed Sharon Tune of Monday, August 17, and Arnita Jones on Tuesday, August 18, with the same request. I have not heard a response to my request. I also indicated to Ms. Jones that there was an active labor dispute at the Grand Hyatt because she had indicated in a response to me that was also posted on this Listserv that "it is the case that there is not now a formal labor dispute at any of the properties." I suggested that she contact Mr. DeGange directly to clarify the situation regarding a formal labor dispute since there does appear to be one in progress and that she does not want incorrect information circulating from the AHA with regard to the status of a formal labor dispute at the Grand Hyatt. I have not heard back from her on this matter either.
