Friends and Colleagues: My article, "Divorce - Union Style," appears on the Nation's website today and on the cover of the next (August 31) issue of the magazine: http://www.thenation.com/doc/20090831/dreier <http://www.thenation.com/doc/20090831/dreier> . It explains the background to the intense battle that led to the break-up of UNITE HERE and the current efforts to negotiate a settlement between that union and SEIU so that both organizations that get back to the important work of organizing workers and passing progressive legislation, including health care reform. Also - for those who live in the LA area, here are two upcoming events -- a Billy Bragg concert and a talk by labor historian Nelson Lichtenstein -- that you won't want to miss: On Saturday, August 29, from 7 to 10 pm, is what's billed as the "Beethoven Billy Bragg Ninth Concert" at the Broad Stage, 1310 11th St. (at Santa Monica Blvd) in Santa Monica. "Bragg meets Beethoven" is the U.S. premiere of Billy Bragg's version of the world famous "Ode to Joy" - the choral finale of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. Other artists include Dwight Trible (jazz), Susie Glaze (bluegrass), Ernest Troost (blues), justin Bischof (piano), the Asia America Orchestra, and the Baker & Tarpag. a Dance Project. The concern is a benefit for Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice (www.cluela.org), a wonderful organization on the front lines of LA's social justice struggles. Ticket information is available by calling (310) 430-1954. Bragg, a British folk-rock artist and political activist, is a fantastic performer and this should be an exceptional concert. On Wednesday, September 2, historian Nelson Lichtenstein will be discussing his important new book, THE RETAIL REVOLUTION: HOW WAL-MART CREATED A BRAVE NEW WORLD OF BUSINESS from noon to 2 pm at the UCLA Labor Center in downtown LA, 675 S. Parkview 90057. Nelson Lichtenstein teaches at UC-Santa Barbara and has written the award-winning biography of Walter Reuther (The Most Dangerous Man in Detroit) and the best one-volume history of American labor (The State of the Union). His new book is an in-depth look at Wal-Mart and how it has influenced the American economy and politics, and what it means for current efforts to end the recession and promote a more progressive society. Says Bob Kuttner: "Readers wishing to grasp the brave new world of Wal-Mart in all its dimensions can't do better than Nelson Lichtenstein's engrossing and chilling account." The event is free. Parking is available next door for $5. Please RSVP to: kcandaele@sbcglobal.net _____________________________________ Peter Dreier Dr. E.P.
