From: "Robert Shaffer" <RoShaf@ship.edu> Eileen Boris of the University of California, Santa Barbara, wrote recently, "Those earning $90,000 will be cut the same percentages as those earning $180,000..." Are there really faculty members in the UC system making $180,000? If so, are these only in medical and law schools, or are they among liberal arts professors? Or was the comparison here to top administrators? I know that the cost of living in most parts of California far exceeds what it costs to live in central Pennsylvania, but $180,000 seems like an awful lot of money for someone in our line of work. (And, of course, those at research universities, with smaller teaching schedules than those of us in more ordinary state colleges, have a greater opportunity to make extra money through writing textbooks.)
