Sent: Tuesday, November 17, 2009 11:49 AM Subject: FW: info for H-Judaica Brian Horowitz Empire Jews: Jewish Nationalism and Acculturation in Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Century Russia. Slavica Publishers, 2009. In this book Professor Horowitz, Sizeler Family Chair Professor at Tulane University, investigates a panorama of figures and issues in fin de siècle Russian-Jewish culture: S. Dubnov, S. An-sky, M. Vinaver, M. Morgulis, the Gintsburg family, the writers, Lev Levanda, S. Frug, Leib Jaffe and Vladimir Jabotinsky. In addition, he treats acculturated intellectuals in the Russian elite: Lev Shestov, M. Gershenzon, and L. Shteinberg. There is even an article on Jacob Schiff . The thesis is that, although the Jews of Russia were repelled by the government, many intellectuals found themselves profoundly inspired by Russian culture and invented imaginative ways of synthesizing Jewish national and Russian ideas. The author explores the genesis and development of the Russian-Jewish synthesis.
