Sent: Thursday, November 12, 2009 11:10 AM Subject: RE: H-JUDAIC Digest - 10 Nov 2009 to 11 Nov 2009 (#2009-193) Orthodoxy and Homosexuality: I'm sorry...the draw of orthodoxy for LGBT people? As a long-time member the Jewish LGBT community in New York City, I have to say that I have never known any LGBT person who wasn't born orthodox to be attracted to the movement; and the LGBT people I've known who have grown up orthodox have struggled deeply with how to maintain their lives as orthodox Jews while their communities tell them they cannot do so unless they give up their gay identity. I'd refer you to the documentary "Trembling Before G-d," if you haven't already seen it, and also the websites http://www.orthogays.org, www.jqyouth.org , and http://djs28.tripod.com. You might also note that gay people enjoy being referred to as homosexuals about as much as black people like being called negroes.
