Sent: Tuesday, February 12, 2008 3:16 PM Public History Topics: Holocaust Memory in the U.S. and Germany (3 credits) Prof. Max Paul Friedman Dates: May 12-June 2, 2008 Course Description This course will examine the politics and aesthetics of commemorating the Holocaust in the sites where it took place through an intensive program of guest lectures and site visits in Berlin. After studying theory on the difference between official and unofficial histories and the political uses of narratives about the past, students will visit the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC then spend a week in Germany (May 16-25). We will explore clashes over interpretations of the past conveyed by such places as the government's official Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe; the Jewish Museum of Berlin; the German Resistance Memorial, an effort to provide a positive lesson in the midst of negative associations with German national identity; community-level memorials that arose often without permission in two former Jewish neighborhoods in East and West Berlin; and Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp, a site where first the Nazis, then the Soviet occupiers confined their prisoners, leading to a controversial effort at multiple commemoration. The course is open to graduate students, advanced undergraduates and anyone interested in public history, Jewish studies, European history, war and society, memory studies. Course assignments include reading, discussion and final paper. Cost The course will cost $6,005. This includes $2,805 for summer tuition (this is the same for undergraduate and graduate students) and a special fee of $3,200 that will cover round-trip tickets to Berlin, hostel accommodations and tours of Berlin's most notable Holocaust museums and memorials. Students will pay for their own ground transportation and food. Registration and Deposit Students must register and pay a deposit of $500 by April 15 to secure their place in the course.
