CALL FOR PAPERS 28TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE ON THE HOLOCAUST AND GENOCIDE "Atrocities Outlawed, Human Rights Affirmed: The International Quest to Halt Genocide since 1948" April 2-4, 2008 Millersville University of Pennsylvania is pleased to announce the Annual Conference on the Holocaust and Genocide. Over the years, Millersville's Annual Conference has examined a number of important issues ranging from the role of Pius XII and the Vatican during the Holocaust to consideration of economic issues during World War II. While the Holocaust remains the frame of reference, the Annual Conference has expanded inquiry to include a comparative perspective and consideration of other venues of mass murder and genocide, including Armenia, the Balkans, Rwanda, and Darfur. The 28th Annual Conference will place special emphasis on the legal, political and institutional efforts as a response to the genocides of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. This year marks the sixtieth anniversary of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Genocide, as well as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. These judicial landmarks coincided with the completion of the work of the International Military Tribunal and the Nuremberg Military Tribunals which have provided the historical framework and precedent for the postwar efforts to punish perpetrators of genocide. The 28th Annual Conference seeks to promote study of the search for international justice and discussion of the origins of juridical philosophies and institutions which emerged as a response to the Holocaust and the other atrocities committed by the Axis powers, as well as to evaluate the successes and failures of the global community in its efforts to enact the principles and spirit of the Convention and Declaration. The organizers of the Conference invite proposals for individual papers or panels. Individual proposals should include the title of the paper, an abstract of no more than 200 words, as well as the author's name, postal address, institutional affiliation and curriculum vitae. Panel proposals should include the title of the panel, a chair, three presenters who would submit individual papers and, if possible, a discussant. Persons wishing to offer their services as chairs and discussants should indicate their affiliation and provide a c. v. Hard copies of proposals should be forwarded to: Prof. Saulius Suziedelis, Director, Annual Conference on the Holocaust and Genocide, Department of History, Millersville University, P. O. Box 1002, Millersville, PA 17551-0302. Electronic submissions may be sent to: ssuziedelis@millersville.edu. Proposals should be submitted by December 31, 2007 although the deadline may be extended in exceptional circumstances.
