Sent: Friday, August 24, 2007 4:35 AM In Milwaukee, there is a Lutheran-originated "Gamaliel Chair in Peace and Justice" -- a visiting teachership that once a year brings some person of varied religious traditions to speak in a range of Milwaukee institutions on issues of peace and social justice. (In 1996, I was the Gamaliel Chair-holder; somewhere in my basement is still a "director's chair" the sponsors gave me with the name "Gamaliel Chair" emblazoned on canvas. I tried to persuade the sponsors to pronounce the name "Gahm'li'el" instead of "Gah-mah'-li'el," to no avail. ) This is the explanation of the name put forward by the sponsors: <<About The Gamaliel Chair in Peace & Justice <<In the book of Acts, fifth chapter, a man named Gamaliel rises up before the council and speaks on behalf of the apostles who are threatened with death by an angry mob. << A teacher of the law, held in honor by all the people, he uses his wisdom and status for justice, opening the way for new ideas to be tested. In freeing the apostles, he calls for reason and faith as alternatives to violence, and moves people to make a decision for reconciliation and change.
