H-JAPAN February 22, 2005 Date: Tue, 22 Feb 2005 10:16:15 -0500 From: Sharon Domier <sdomier@library.umass.edu> Subject: Shinsengumi and undergrad research Dear list, I wanted to follow up with a couple of new online sources that I am in love with and that I think work nicely for undergrads as well as us old fogeys. If you have money, please consider subscribing to JapanKnowledge, a compendium of online reference tools such as the Kodansha Encyclopedia of Japan, Shogakkan Dai Hyakka Zensho, and a wide range of dictionaries (including E<->J). It also offers book contents going back to 1926, which is a fabulous way to find out what is inside of the book before you buy it or ILL it. There are also historical movie clips and the Edo-Tokyo overlay map. Lots to keep you and your students busy. We got our license through Kinokuniya in the States. http://www.japanknowledge.com/ If you have no money, you can still get at some things, like a variety of dictionaries (I usually use the Goo ones, as well as Jim Breen and Rikai), AND the Wikipedia. So, today I really wanted to let you know about the Wikipedia. Wikipedia is a free and collaborative process of building an information databank. It is available in many languages, including Japanese. It is a growing concern and very useful. Take a look at the section on Shinsengumi, for example: http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/新撰組 It provides a historical context, links to other entries (like biographies) and reading lists. What a wonderful source, and since it is online, you could also use the online dictionaries to speed up the reading process.
