The Jameel Prize is a biennial international award for contemporary art and design inspired by Islamic tradition, organised by the V&A and Abdul Latif Jameel Community Initiatives and curated by Salma Tuqan and Tim Stanley. The third Jameel Prize was awarded to the Istanbul couture house Dice Kayek at the V&A on 10 December, and the accompanying exhibition, Jameel Prize 3, opened the next day to good reviews (five stars in The Guardian). For the first time, the Jameel Prize show is in the Porter Gallery, the V&A's main Contemporary gallery, right next to the main entrance. It is free, as is entrance to the Museum. It is open until 21 April 2014, and the show will then tour internationally. For more information, see http://www.vam.ac.uk/content/exhibitions/exhibition-jameel-prize/. Please note, too, that two other headline exhibitions at the V&A, "Pearls", and "Masterpieces of Chinese Painting", will close on 19 January 2014. "Pearls" was originated in Doha, while, of course, an impressive number of ideas in the Chinese paintings re-appear in Islamic art. Spot the background pattern from the Courtauld metalwork bag (Gambier Parry wallet) in the Song painting, "Court Ladies Preparing Newly Woven Silk", for example. http://www.vam.ac.uk/content/exhibitions/exhibition-pearls/ http://www.vam.ac.uk/content/exhibitions/masterpieces-of-chinese-painting/ Tim Stanley --
